The seminal article from the May issue of Harpers magazine on the rise of the megachurches is now on line, with a focus on the largest megachurch in America: New Life Church in Colorado Springs. This is a "must read" if you want to understand the fundamentalist mindset.
Soldiers of Christ I (Harpers.org):
"They are drawn as if by magnetic forces; they speak of Colorado Springs, home to the greatest concentration of fundamentalist Christian activist groups in American history, both as a last stand and as a kind of utopia in the making."

Thanks NonProphet. I like your site.
I live in N. Colorado Springs about four miles from the megacomplex, New Life Church. Focus on the Family is also in the vicinity. I keep meaning to attend a service at NLC, but unfortunately I value my Sunday mornings and just can't tear myself away from the beautiful trails of the Pikes Peak Region. One day soon I will go and report my experience on these pages. I have friends and colleagues who frequent this church and are among the "true believers". Once I attend a session I will also "interview" them with my questions.
I find it fascinating that Colorado Springs, home of the megachurches, also has more fast food outlets per capita than any other city in the USA (Fast Food Nation). Also, interesting enough the debate at City Hall this winter was whether to allow people to "pack heat" into the County Court House or not. The Town Council was in favor, but the employees were vociferous enough to force them to back off. Strange town, but the natural surroundings are sublime.
