Gore: Bush is 'renegade rightwing extremist'
Tell the truth, brother Gore!! Wake up, America:
Guardian Unlimited: "Al Gore has made his sharpest attack yet on the George Bush presidency, describing the current US administration as 'a renegade band of rightwing extremists'.
In an interview with the Guardian today, the former vice-president calls himself a 'recovering politician', but launches into the political fray more explicitly than he has previously done during his high-profile campaigning on the threat of global warming.
Denying that his politics have shifted to the left since he lost the court battle for the 2000 election, Mr Gore says: 'If you have a renegade band of rightwing extremists who get hold of power, the whole thing goes to the right.'"

MoJo Blog: Sex, Swedish-Style
MoJo Blog: Sex, Swedish-Style: "The Washington Post has a good article about how European countries with healthy attitudes towards sex—or, let's say, the sorts of attitudes that least resemble Focus on the Family's—have fewer problems with STDs and unwanted pregnancy than, say, we do here in the United States:"
Michigan High Point attempt
End of the road on our attempt on the high point of Michigan north of L'Anse on the UP last Friday, May the 12th. With 12 miles to go to the high point from here, we prudently decided to turn around and head back to our hotel in Eagle River, Wisconsin where we had a marathon to run the next day...

The Blog | Jane Smiley: Disorderly Conduct | The Huffington Post
Jane Smiley nails him: :
"This brings us to little George. How do you like this for a description:
• frequent temper tantrums
• excessive arguing with adults
• active defiance and refusal to comply with adult requests and rules
• deliberate attempts to annoy or upset people
• blaming others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior
• often being touchy or easily annoyed by others
• frequent anger and resentment
• mean and hateful talking when upset
• seeking revenge"

Very Basic Suggested Reading List on Middle East
Juan Cole has a Very Basic Suggested Reading List on Middle East. I've only read two: "The Assassin's Gate" and "A History of the Arab People's". Guess I'd better hotfoot it down to the library...

TheStar.com - PM is no Bush, says U.S. pollster: "'The Canadian and U.S. leaders could not be more different,' Frank Luntz said yesterday. 'Stephen Harper is a genuine intellectual, brilliant in his understanding of issues.
'I think I'll leave it at that.'"

The Israeli Lobby
Two Harvard professors lobbed a bombshell last month in the London Review of Books with their article on The Israeli Lobby and American Foreign Policy. Their thesis is that we Americans have been hoodwinked into aligning ourselves so closely with Israel that we are no longer acting in the interest of the United States. Predictably the usual suspects are launching scathing personal attacks on the two professors and charges of Anti-Semitism rather than engage in honest debate. The article from the London Review of Books: The Israeli Lobby. If you can't access it here is the original Working Paper (PDF) published at Harvard University.
Wikipedia has a good overview of the debate.
The Nation takes it on in this week's issue: "Ferment over Israeli Lobby"

AlterNet: America's Worst Governors
Not surprisingly, Colorado's Republican governor Bill Owens is one of the top three of America's Worst Governors. Fortunately this is his last term. His most recent outrage was to veto a measure for clean air in Colorado.

Sam the Wolfdog Update
Sam spent the better part of last week up in Denver at the Veterinarian Emergency Clinic under the care of Dr. Stephen Lane, one of only 100 animal neurologists in the world. Dr. Lane's best surmise at this stage is that Sam suffered "viral encephalitis" that initiated a lesion on his thalmus: the section of his brain that guides the limbs, etc. This explains the loss of sensation for Sam along his right side.
Sam is home now and though he is impaired he can go for short walks. We are waiting on the rest of his lab results to see exactly what happened. Hoping for a full recover for the old boy...
