Capitol Peak in Winter

Aron Ralston was the first person to climb all of the 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado in calendar winter. This photo is from his winter ascent of Capitol Peak, acknowledged by most 14er climbers to be the most difficult 14er in any circumstances, let alone winter.

My attempts to climb it in calendar winter are documented here, here, and here. I failed again in summer, before I reached success in the fall of 2001.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
